Press Release: New QAPI Accreditation for Nursing Home Care

Providigm, LLC, a developer of quality management systems for skilled nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, today announced details on the first National Accreditation for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) for Nursing Homes and Centers. Providigm’s QAPI Accreditation is based on standards for excellence in continuously improving quality of care and life for nursing home residents. The accreditation standards include measures of the extent to which nursing homes assess the care they provide to their post-hospital and long-term care residents, and then correct quality concerns. Nursing homes and centers receiving the first National Accreditation for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) will be announced by Providigm on Monday, May 6, 2013.

“It is about time that we recognize those elder care providers that are committed to continuously improving the care that they provide based on feedback from residents and families about concerns such as choice and dignity, as well as clinical quality issues such as nutrition, rehabilitation, and preventing acute illness and hospitalization,” said Dr. Andrew Kramer, CEO at Providigm and an international expert on measuring quality of elder care.

Conducting ongoing and widespread QAPI as required by Providigm’s Accreditation Standards is proven to have a dramatic impact on care. A recent study of nursing homes across 41 states showed that facilities meeting the QAPI accreditation standards in 2012 experienced an average reduction of more than six survey deficiencies. Of the facilities in the study, those that received Civil Money Penalties demonstrated an average penalty reduction of over $22,000.

The national rollout of the QAPI Accreditation Program will be spearheaded by Barbara Baylis, RN, MSN, who has joined Providigm as the Accreditation Program Director. With more than 20 years as a Nurse Executive, Ms. Baylis is ideally suited to lead this program. Ms. Baylis has served as a Master Examiner for the American Health Care Association (AHCA) Quality Awards, is a member of the Technical Expert Panel developing federal standards for QAPI in nursing homes, and received AHCA’s 2012 Mary K. Ousley Champion of Quality Award.

“Systems to continuously improve quality of care are key. They help struggling nursing centers to provide good care, and good nursing centers to provide even better care,” said Ms. Baylis. As part of the accreditation program, Barbara Baylis will also oversee Providigm’s annual award program for top quality outcomes in 2012.
